O CANADA
Dr. Linda HancockThings change! Every day I notice that there are businesses closing, passwords expiring, procedures being upgraded and the horizon boasts new construction projects.
We’ve come a long way from covered wagons, root cellars to store food and making our own supplies and clothing – just because we didn’t have many choices way back.
During the second world war things changed a lot as men were serving and women entered the workforce. Then the economy changed and home making became much more mechanical, and the economic expectations were altered.
As a child growing up in rural Saskatchewan, I remember that everyone knew our business and families took responsibility for helping to raise us and keep us safe. Now many do not even know their neighbours.
Technological advancements have become so powerful that most of us can’t even go to the bathroom without a phone in case we miss something. Things we would never have known decades before in a country that we might not be able to pinpoint on a map capture our thoughts.
Yes, things have changed. Even our national anthem has had edits, but I want to print the most recent version today, so we remember what hasn’t changed.
VERSE I
O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada, We stand on guard for thee.
CHORUS
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
VERSE II
O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us thy broad domain, From East to Western Sea.
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North, strong and free!
CHORUS
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Happy Canada Day, everyone!
