Lack of Fun Can Hurt Your Business

Working in a business can be very hard work. There are times that stress can wear you down. Even your clients will likely feel the effects of an environment that is too serious.

As a business owner, it is therefore important that you are able to add a little fun and humour into the mix. Oh, I'm not talking about being silly or trying to make others laugh by telling them jokes. What I am talking about is building relationships with others in a light-hearted manner.

This can be done in a number of different ways. Following are some examples:

1. Start with yourself - There is an old expression that states "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". Don't take yourself too seriously. Even though you are the owner of the business, you must remember to take care of yourself and this includes spending time relaxing, enjoying hobbies and getting enough rest. Look for the humour in situations rather than focusing on just stressful events.

2. Enjoy the humour of others - All around us are people and things that can provoke laughter - if we let them. Take time each week to do things and be with people who you enjoy. You might invest in your favourite comedy re-run, chuckle about a song from your youth or even schedule a dinner with someone with a good sense of humour. And remember to take a few extra minutes to get to know the fun side of your clients.

3. Plan some interactive activities that you, your clients and other business associates can enjoy together. Host a barbecue. Set up a golf game. Create a fun contest that will capture the interest of others.

Running a business can be very much like dating. If you are not attractive and fun to be around, the chances are that the relationship with not go very far. It is the same thing with your clients.

A lack of fun can hurt your business as a somber environment might not be very attractive for them. But, on the other hand, if you make a conscious effort to enjoy each moment and invite others to participate with you in a comfortable and fun relationship you will soon begin to notice that your clients will return again and again. They will also likely encourage their friends, neighbours and family to be part of your attractive environment.
