Have Fun Time As a Goal!
I recently was the guest speaker for the Annual Provincial Convention for Crown Jewels of Canada Society. This organization is the only national non-profit in Canada that is just for women. Members have created a circle of friends uniting women across the country from sea to sea. They keep their communications open through monthly newsletters and a website as well as local, provincial and national events.
Perhaps you have seen some of these women in your community but didn't know the history of their group or why they are together. Members only have four rules that they must follow:
- Wear any combination of red, white or purple.
- Wear something on their head (but not necessarily a hat)
- Pay membership dues on time.
- Have fun!
And these ladies know how to have fun! When they recently congregated in Medicine Hat for their Provincial Convention they hired a band and danced! They decorated the room with flowers and shoes! They shared lively conversation at mealtimes! They gave away prizes! And they laughed!
I was thinking about how many clients come to see me with a goal of wanting to learn how to be happy. Well, these ladies not only make fun a goal - they make it a mission! They don't wait around for things to happen to them. They make things happen!
So often we are focused on work or troubles and forget to schedule time for fun into our busy lives. We put everything above our own self-care. Time slips away and before we know it, we realize it has been a long, long time since we had a holiday or shared a laugh or contacted the people who we really care about.
Ancient scriptures talk about the sower and the seed. Some seed fell on hard ground and died. Some seed was choked out by the weeds. Only a few seeds found fertile ground and grew.
When you come up with excuses rather than action then you have planted on hard ground. If you allow the cares of life to take over then it is like having your dreams choked out by the weeds. But when you make a firm plan and commit to it by marking self-care and fun time off on your calendar, then you will soon enjoy the fruit that grows from this fertile ground!
Oh, I know that there are some people who are probably thinking that life has responsibilities and learning to work is more important. Not true. Remember the old adage that states "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"?
In order to have a healthy and balanced life, you need to have both work and play. The key is to ensure that you include both and not neglect either of them.
Why not consider the Crown Jewels of Canada as role models and live it up a little? This will help you to build relationships, gain perspective and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. You will also return to the workplace and face challenges with a better attitude.
