Stumble Forward

I recently watched a program about Samuel Clemens, the author who is perhaps better known as Mark Twain. Most people have read two of his most popular books in which he created the fictional characters of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Clemens grew up in Missouri and spent time on the Mississippi River surrounded by an environment that allowed slavery. He always wrote what he knew and these experiences were therefore prevalent in his books. Clemens worked as a typesetter and as a riverboat pilot in his youth. He later became a journalist who used his sense of humour to...

The Freedom of Spring!

Winter is a lot of work! Hats and gloves, scarves, boots and jackets have to be donned before one can even leave the house. Vehicles must be serviced with winter tires and safety kits. There is snow to shovel and treacherous roads have to be carefully navigated. Extra time must be allotted for travel. Sporting equipment designed for the weather conditions must be properly prepared before it can be used. But then spring arrives and there is a new freedom that comes with it. One can head outside without adding extra layers of clothing and just keep on walking. We...

Gratitude and Blessings

This morning I met an older lady in the elevator and she began a little conversation about where we were going. I stated "I'm off to work" and with a big smile she replied "That's good. You get paid for that, don't you?" I couldn't help but smile back. Then, just before getting off at her floor she said "At least I can get up, walk and do things". What a good attitude! It reminded me of the importance of being thankful for the little things. So many people complain about HAVING to work or about their jobs. Some are...

It's Time To Give Thanks!

Many people complain and complain about things or people in their lives. Some even seem to have nothing positive at all to think about. No matter how difficult we believe our situation is, however, there is always someone who has it worse. It is easy to forget that other people suffer on a daily basis and have few of the blessings that we tend to take for granted when we put our time and energy into focusing on ourselves. This Thanksgiving, try to keep things in perspective: If you are unhappy with your housing - think about those who are...

Self-Improvement - Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Tonight I was watching the popular television show "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" and began thinking that it would be great if life was like this. Imagine what it would be like to have everyone at home or work clap and cheer when you answer a simple question. The lights would flash and the music rise in a crescendo. You would smile, wave and bow to the audience knowing that you were appreciated and that everyone truly wanted you to succeed. Then, when there is a question that you aren't sure about, you would merely poll those in the...

Self-Improvement - Three Things We Can Promote Which Would Improve the World

The other day one of my clients stated that she would like to teach the three "R"s to people. I immediately began to wonder what had lead her to this stance as she wasn't a teacher my thoughts were that she was referring to "reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic". I was surprised when she went on to explain that her three "R"s consisted of "Respect", "Responsibility" and "Return to Common Sense". My client demonstrated some wisdom and I support her view from the following perspective: 1. Respect needs to be a global attitude that includes respect for self, others, and the...

The Psychology of Spring

Take a deep breath! What you are inhaling is the beginning of a new season. There is a fresh smell in the air that we recognize from previous years. Our taste buds are teased by fumes from barbecues delights of those who are eager to move the cooking outside. There is also expectancy for the vegetative growth of buds, trees and grasses that will soon appear in beautiful fragrances. The fresh air coaxes us into the outdoors where we can observe people who have donned spring coats and ventured outside to walk their dogs, ride bikes or begin the yard...

Be Well-Seasoned in Your Life

I've loved food my whole life. I love buying groceries, looking at weekly flyers and taste testing new recipes. I love restaurants and invitations to friends' for dinner and eating at home. I love lunch and dinner but mostly I love snacks. Ice cream cones, cookies, cheese cake, pies, rice pudding, chocolate covered almonds, muffins, O Henry bars... Yes, I love food ... and the Food Channel. The trouble is that every show seems to feature a chef who loads their recipes with everything that my doctors (and common sense) warn me against - like sugar, butter, salt and various...

Balance is Important For Healthy Living

In 1990, Dr. Seuss, published the book "Oh, the Places You'll Go" in which he claims "Life's a Great Balancing Act". Unfortunately our world is out of balance and full of contradictions. We can transplant a human heart but are not able to protect it from breaking. We can make a baby in a test tube but not feed all the millions of hungry children in the Third World. We give out Peace prizes but do not know how to make peace where over 100 wars are now occurring. We have developed a way for man to walk on the...

Recognizing We're All in This Together!

A couple of years ago I travelled to Jamaica. I'm not a typical tourist who sits on the beach with a Margarita. I loaded my luggage with supplies for this third-world country and arranged to visit three schools and an orphanage. Then I decided that it would be fun to visit Family Court! Jamaica has a murder every thirty minutes and despite warnings about not leaving the resort, I hired a taxi and headed for the Court House. Well, what an old primitive building. Crooked cement stairs up the side allowed me to view the first floor which housed used...

We All Have Troubles!

There once was a young boy whose mother died when he was nine years of age. His older brother had previously died in infancy. The boy and his sister were left to look after each other for some time while his father went to another area to seek a wife. This boy and his father had relationship problems serious enough that he did not attend his father's funeral when he died. The boy didn't have more than a few years of schooling. When he was 7 years of age he was saved from drowning and at 10 years of age...
